Paint the Snow

Book Extension Activity

Paint the snow is a fantastic winter activity for kids, but let’s be honest-it’s really fun for all ages!

Painting the snow is so easy! It only requires spay bottles, water and food coloring.

You will see throughout this website that I really like to pair kids activities with a related children’s book.

A project or activity that is completed after reading a book is called a book extension activity.

Book extension activities are such a powerful way to strengthen your child’s literacy skills.

I like to pair Paint the Snow with a book titled Snow Friends.

It’s an adorable winter themed story of a little bear who wakes up during the middle of winter and feels lonely.

He decides to build a snowman so he can have a friend. In the process he meets two unlikely woodland creatures and their winter adventure continues!

Head to your local library to get a copy or purchase the book below.

directions

First read Snow Friends together.

Afterwards, talk with your child about the book. Ask your child questions about the plot and characters.

Why did Bear feel lonely?
What did Bear decide to do to help him feel less lonely?
Who did he meet?
Why was Rabbit upset at first?
What activities did the animal friends do in the snow?
What was your favorite part?
What was your least favorite part?
Fill the bottles with water and food coloring. I found that the squeeze bottles worked better than the spray bottles.

The squeeze bottles also allow for more control when making letters, designs and shapes.
Head outside with your child and start painting the snow!
Let your child explore and create!

After your child has had plenty of time to create and explore, encourage them to make shapes in the snow.

For older children, invite them to make letters or paint their name in the snow.
