Melting Snowman Science Experiment

simple science for kids

Kids absolutely love this Melting Snowman Science Experiment! Getting kids excited about science and experiments is an important step to helping them build a solid academic base.

The Melting Snowman is a fun and safe way to explore early chemistry concepts with kids. They marvel at the chemical reaction created when vinegar and baking soda mix and watch in awe as the adorable snowmen melt right before their eyes!

This winter STEM activity is perfect for Preschool, Kindergarten and Elementary aged kids and is a wonderful way to supplement your Homeschool Science curriculum.

The Melting Snowman Science Experiment also works well as a book extension activity for the book Snow Friends or an other winter themed book.

directions

Melting Snowman Science Experiment

optional

  • First read Snow Friends together or another snow themed book..

  • Afterwards, talk with your child about the plot.

  • Ask your child what their favorite part was.

  • What was their least favorite part?

  • Add baking soda to a bowl.

  • Pour in a little water and mix.

  • Keep adding water and mixing until the baking soda turns crumbly and moldable.

Add glitter to the baking soda.

  • Next, form the baking soda mix into balls.

  • Lay the balls in a dish.

  • Add googly eyes and an orange triangle for a nose.

  • Sprinkle with glitter.

  • Place dish in the freezer.

  • You can freeze for as long as you would like.

  • Keep in mind the longer you freeze the snowmen, the longer they will take to dissolve once your child starts adding vinegar.

  • I would recommend freezing them for around an hour or so.

Set out the frozen snowman, vinegar and a dropper or spoon.

  • Invite your child to add drops of vinegar to the frozen snowman.

  • Observe what happens and talk about the reaction it causes!

Continue to add vinegar until the snowmen are completely dissolved.

  • It’s a chemical reaction

  • When a base and acid are mixed together- a gas called carbon dioxide is formed

  • Baking soda is the base

  • Vinegar is the acid
