Crayon Resist Watercolor Painting is a hands-on and colorful way to teach literacy and math skills to kids!
 
Kids absolutely love trying to find the hidden letters, numbers and messages written in the “invisible ink”. 
 
What I love about crayon resist watercolor painting is that it’s incredibly versatile. You can use this technique to teach multiple literacy and math skills.  
 
The Directions are simple
  1. Firmly write on a piece of white paper with a white crayon.
  2. Invite your child to paint over the paper using watercolors.

Learning Activities

name recognition and spelling

You can use crayon resist painting to promote mastery of name recognition, phonemic and spelling skills. 
  1. Simply write the name or word you would like your child to spell in write crayon on a white piece of paper. 
  2. It’s helpful to put boxes around the letters so your child knows where to paint.
  3. After you have written the name or word on the paper tell your child what you wrote and ask them what the first letter of that name or word is. 
  4. After they give you their answer- invite them to paint the first box to see if they are right.
  5. Next ask them what the next letter in the name or word is and invite them to paint the second letter. 
  6. Continue with this until they have uncovered the entire name/word.

letter and sound recognition

This activity is perfect for children learning the alphabet and working on letter and sound recognition.
  1. First draw a chart with 26 boxes. 
  2. Write one letter in each box. 
  3. Invite your child to paint each box to see what letter is revealed! 
  4. Ask your child what the letter is and what sounds it makes. 
  5. Ask them to predict what letter will be next!

number recognition and number order

  4. Ask them what number they see. 
  5. Ask them to predict what numbers come next. 
  6. For older children, you can use this technique to teach skip counting both even and odd, counting by 5’s, by 10’s, and by 100’s. 
  7. The sky is the limit! If your child is in school-incorporate the math skills they are currently learning.

math facts

Crayon resist watercolor painting is a really fun way for kids to practice math skills! 
  1. Write math facts in white crayon, being sure to draw a box around each number to guide your child in knowing where to paint. 
  2. Ask your child to paint the left side of the equation first.
  3. Have them the solve the equation and state their answer.
  4. Invite them to paint the right side of the equation to check their answer.
