Digging for treasure is so much fun -especially for kids! This Moon Sand Treasure Hunt is a simple hands-on way for kids to practice literacy skills all while digging for hidden items! 
 
This treasure hunt also reinforces print awareness, letter recognition, word recognition and phonological awareness. 
 
All you need is moon sand, a tray, small objects and word cards. 
 
You can either buy moon sand here– or you can make your own.

Moon Sand Treasure Hunt

  • Fill a tray or bin with Moon Sand
  • Gather a group of objects to hide
  • Bury objects in the sand
  • Set out word cards that match with the objects hidden in the sand.
  • Show your child the word cards.
  • Invite your child to find the hidden objects.
  • When they find an object ask them to match it to the matching word card.
