10 apples up on top
I love this 10 Apples Up On Top activity! This book extension activity is so much fun, very effective and was always a favorite in my classroom during the fall.
Kids absolutely love the idea of reenacting this beloved book!
Although it is quite time consuming-the end result is definitely worth it.
Kids will read and re-read this book about themselves over and over again.
Before you begin, gather 10 apple cut-outs and grab some tape! Also get a copy of the beloved book Ten Apples Up On Top! You can get a copy of the book here!
Once you’ve gathered all your supplies, read the book with your child!
After you read the book, talk about the book together! Take some time to ask your child questions about the plot. Share your favorite part of the book with your child and ask your child to share their favorite parts of the book!
Reading books together and talking about the book before, during and after are all excellent ways to increase your child’s reading comprehension.
Reading comprehension (the ability of a child to understand and summarize what they’ve just read) is an essential component to building a solid literacy foundation.
With that being said-it’s time to recreate this book with your child!
Let’s get started!
First-tape an apple cutout on the wall-just above the top of your child’s head.
Invite your child to stand underneath the apple and then take a photo.
Next, tape another apple above the first on the wall-and take another photo.
Repeat until you have taped all 10 apples on the wall and have taken photos of your child with each additional apple.
The final step is to turn these photos into a book!
Print each photo – one page for each photo.
Write the following sentence under each photo…
(number) apple/s up on top. OR (NAME) has (number) apples up on top.
Bind the book together using a stapler or book rings
After you’ve finished-keep the book in a prominent place in your home where your child will be have easy access to it.
Read the book together several times -running your finger under each word as you say it.
While you read, periodically pause and let your child fill in the blank. Before you know it your child will be able to read the book independently!
VARIATION: Number the apples 1-10 for additional number recognition practice!
