sensory play

Encourage handwriting at home with this fun, fall writing tray! Writing trays are a stress-free way to teach Preschool and Kindergarten kids proper letter formation and handwriting skills.

Writing trays are also a wonderful way for kids to strengthen important fine motor skills and get exposure to sensory play at the same time.

directions

How to Make a Fall Writing Tray

  • Add 3 cups of rice to a large Ziploc bag
  • Add 3 teaspoons of vinegar to the rice
  • Add several drops of orange food coloring
  • I also added a few drops of yellow food coloring, after I mixed in the orange food coloring, to give it a candy corn look!
  • You can also use red and yellow food coloring
  • Close bag and mix well!
  • Lay rice on a paper towel lined tray and allow to dry
  • It can take anywhere from 2-24 hours for the rice to dry
  • Once the rice is dry add it to a tray
  • I find that using a thin layer works best for a writing tray
  • Clip two clothespins to the back edge of the tray
  • Place a tracing card inside the clothespins
  • With the paint brush encourage your child to write the letter written on the card!
  • When finished, simply shake the tray to erase the letter!
  • Add a new letter or number card to the clothespins holder
  • Write in the rice!
  • Continue as long as your child is interested and engaged
