This simple spelling game is a fun, hands-on way for kids to strengthen multiple literacy skills including phonemic awareness, spelling skills, decoding ability and word recognition. 

The Envelope Spelling Game is a simple way to get kids excited about spelling!  The difficulty level of this game can also be easily adjusted to fit the needs of your child.

How to play the Envelope Spelling Game

  • Download and print picture cards (download link below) 
  • Cut out picture cards 
  • Glue picture cards onto the top of the envelopes
  • Glue one picture per envelope
  • Write words of items from picture cards onto index cards
  • Write one word per index card
  • Pull out magnetic letters to spell the word written on the index card
  • Place the index card and letters into the envelope with the matching picture
  • Once the envelopes are filled, introduce the game to your child!
  • Invite your child to empty the contents of the envelope into a tray or onto a table
  • Ask your child to read the index card, assisting as needed
  • Next, encourage your child to spell the word written on the index card with the magnetic letters
  • After your child spells the word, ask your them to spell it aloud, pointing to each letter as they do
  • When finished, your child will return both the index card and letters to the envelop and pick out another envelope
  • To make this game more challenging, remove the index cards from the envelopes and give your child the chance to spell the words independently
  • Another way to increase the challenge of this spelling game is to add extra letters to the envelope that are not needed to spell the word correctly
  • Add envelopes to a basket
  • Set basket inside a tray
  • Keep the game out and accessible for your child to play and access independently
