This fun and simple Christmas STEM project is perfect for Preschool, Kindergarten and Elementary aged kids. 
 
It’s also a colorful way to explore science at home and to supplement any Homeschool curriculum.

Christmas Magic Milk Science Experiment

  • First pour WHOLE MILK onto a plate or shallow dish
  • Milk must be full fat
  • Also, if possible, use room temp milk
  • Next, invite your child to pick a cookie cutter and place it somewhere in the milk
  • Now it’s time to add food coloring
  • Add three drops of green food coloring to the inside of the cookie cutter
  • Then, add three drops of three different colors to the milk-anywhere outside the cookie cutter
  • Next, dip the Q-tip into a bowl of DAWN dish soap
  • Invite your child to place the Q-Tip into the middle of the green coloring in the cookie cutter
  • Watch what happens!
  • Grab a new Q-Tip
  • Dip the Q-Tip into the dish soap 
  • Place the Q-Tip in the middle of the cluster of three different food colors 
  • Watch the reaction as the colors dance around each other!
  • Continue adding more dish soap using the Q-tip 
  • The colors will continue to dance around until the reaction is complete!

How to does the
Magic Milk Experiment work?

Milk is made up of protein, fat and minerals. When the soap is added-it breaks up the fat molecules in the milk. The soap essentially chases the fat molecules around the plate trying to attach to them. It’s like a big game of tag!
