Snowflake Salt Painting

winter activity for kids

Snowflake Salt Painting for Kids.  This easy, winter themed salt painting project is a fun, chilly day activity for preschool, kindergarten and elementary aged kids.

Raised Salt Painting has always been a favorite in our house and in my classroom.

It’s really versatile and creates incredibly unique creations that allow for kids to really explore and experiment with painting in new ways.

You can either encourage your child to free draw their snowflakes to use for the project or you can download a set of free Snowflake Templates below.

How to Make a
Snowflake Salt Painting

  • Add several drops of food coloring to small cups of water

  • You want to make sure the color is bright and highly concentrated so use a little bit of water and lots of food coloring.

  • Invite your child to draw a snowflake on a piece of white card-stock paper OR

  • Print Snowflake templates

  • DOWNLOAD Templates HERE!

  • Place snowflake in a tray or on a cookie tray

  • Trace the snowflake outline with glue

  • You can encourage your child to do this step-but depending on their age-they may need a little help

  • Pour salt over the glue

  • Be sure to cover the entire snowflake with a thick layer of salt, making sure to cover all of the glue

  • When finished, carefully lift the paper and pour the excess salt back into the cup of salt

  • Invite your child to use a dropper and drop colored water onto the salted glue snowflake

  • Watch as the salt absorbs the colored water!

  • Encourage your child to use whatever colors they would like

  • Remind them that no two snowflakes are the same and that all snowflakes are beautifully unique!

  • Once your child is finished painting-let the salt painting dry overnight

  • I recommend not moving the snowflake painting off of the tray or cookie sheet until its completely dry or the colors will run.

  • If you need to move the tray or cookie sheet so it’s out the way-just do so very carefully.
