Fizzy Heart Art
Valentine's Day STEAM Project for Kids
Fizzy Heart Art is a fascinating Valentine’s Day STEAM activity for kids! Getting kids excited about science and experiments is an important step in helping them build a solid academic base. This Valentine’s Day themed STEAM project is perfect for doing just that!
Fizzy Heart Art is a fun and safe way to explore early chemistry concepts with kids. Children marvel at the chemical reaction created when vinegar and baking soda mix. Kids watch in awe as the paint begins to erupt and bubble right before their eyes!

Fizzy Heart Art
In a paint cup-Mix 1 Tbsp of Tempura Paint and 3 Tbsp of baking soda. Mix with a spoon and not the paintbrush. The texture will be thick and paste like. Keep in mind the higher the ratio of baking soda the more dramatic the reaction will be.
Cut watercolor paper into heart shapes. You can use any type of paper-however I found that watercolor paper works the best for this project.
It’s time to paint! Ask your child to paint the heart shape with the newly mixed baking soda paint. Set out glitter for your child to sprinkle over the painted heart for some added sparkle.
Once your child is finished painting and glittering-invite them to add drops of vinegar to their heart! Watch as the paint begins to bubble and erupt!
Observe what happens and talk about the chemical reaction that is occurring.
Continue as long as your child is interested!

Extend Learning
Extend your child's learning by sharing scientific facts. Introduce new vocabulary words while you're talking. Discuss what the words mean and try to use the new vocab words in conversation over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a chemical reaction
When a base and acid are mixed together- a gas called carbon dioxide is formed
Baking soda is the base
Vinegar is the acid
